Jilmen Talboom (Herentals, 2000) was selected by the jury for his series of portraits influenced by the great masters of the 19th century, John Singer Sargent in particular. Working from observation, both on location and in the studio, he depicted his sitters in contemporary settings, painting directly on the canvas, meticulously connecting the old and the new in his distinctive painterly manner.
